I found the edge of love. To my surprise, it wasn’t the sheer and absolute cliff I was expecting but rather a steep valley, dotted with rocks and cacti. Eager to explore, I began lowering myself down slowly, watching my footing, careful not to trip on an unforeseen root or boulder. But I still fell. I placed my weight on a rock and rather than holding me, it gave and I tumbled down, head over heels. My body was pincushioned with cactus needles and my ribs broke on the hard slope. My skull cracked on a particularly sharp boulder. When I reached the bottom, I laid there for a moment, in too much pain to move or think or feel. I thought about dying but instead decided to climb back out the way I came. Slowly I crawled up the slope, using roots and rocks as handholds, pulling myself up on my belly. While falling had taken no time at all, getting out seemed like an eternity. Finally, somehow, I managed to pull myself over the edge, rolling over to face the yellow sky. I thought of what I had just done, all the blood and missing pieces I had left in the valley, and sighed. At least I wouldn’t die in the valley. Although, maybe I should have. In the moments before I fell I could have sworn I saw someone on the opposite end, coming down to meet me.
